Professional Information Sessions:

In addition to information sessions for parents and the general public, Eaton Arrowsmith Learning Centre offers informative afternoons designed for professionals in related fields.  These information sessions enable professionals to learn more about the Arrowsmith Program, a cognitive remediation program based on the theory of neuroplasticity.

Initially developed by Toronto’s Barbara Arrowsmith Young over 30 years ago, the Arrowsmith Program is now one of the most unique educational experiences offered to students with learning and attention difficulties in BC.  It can help students with learning difficulties who have problems with memory, reasoning, social perception, receptive and expressive language and fine-motor dysfunctions. The Arrowsmith Program addresses reading, writing and mathematical underachievement.  The program benefits students with specific cognitive weaknesses that impede academic and social success.  It is a program like no other in British Columbia.

The Professionals’ Information Sessions begin with a presentation about neuroplasticity, the Arrowsmith Program, and Eaton Arrowsmith Learning Centre. Senior staff members will share insights into recent research in the field of neuroplasticity, and familiarize professionals with Eaton Arrowsmith Learning Centre and the Arrowsmith Program.  During this presentation, staff members will also provide information on the success EAS graduates are finding as they transition back into full academic curriculum.  After years of struggling with reading, writing, math, spelling, concept formation, processing speed and social interaction, students have emerged from Eaton Arrowsmith Learning Centre with the capacity to not only survive but thrive in the education system.

Professionals will then receive a tour of the school, and will meet students in the cognitive classrooms who are putting neuroplasticity into practice.  Students will be available to answer questions about the cognitive exercises; they are very excited to explain what they are working on, and how these exercises are strengthening particular brain areas.

Finally, there will be a group question and answer period, providing a chance to debrief this experience, to ask questions of the staff, and to discuss the Arrowsmith Program with other professionals in the field.
